Based in Los Angeles, Dan Rufolo is an accomplished composer and pianist whose versatility and ability to bridge a range of genres brings a unique voice to all of his projects. Dan’s compositions reflect both technical mastery and emotional depth, and are characterized by a fusion of improvisation, classical sensibility, and cinematic storytelling. His ability to convey complex emotions through music has made him a sought-after composer and performer.

Education and Musical Foundations

Dan earned his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from William Paterson University in 2010, where he studied under jazz luminaries such as Mulgrew Miller and Harold Mabern. He went on to receive a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2013, further honing his skills with mentors like Dave Liebman and Jim McNeely. His classical training under professors Lisa Yui and Elka Kirkpatrick expanded his musical palette and deepened his versatility, enabling him to fluidly navigate between jazz improvisation and Western concert music traditions.

Performance Career and Album Releases

Dan’s early career was marked by the formation of the Dan Rufolo Trio in 2009, featuring Arthur Vint on drums and Bill Thoman on bass. Their debut album, Novelty, showcased Dan’s

innovative approach to rhythm and harmony, earning praise for its thought-provoking compositions. According to Jazz Corner, “Novelty is thought provoking, invigorating, and you’ll find yourself holding your breath not to miss a note.” In 2011, the trio expanded to include Rich Perry (tenor sax) and Nathan Eklund (trumpet) for the album Laughter, which was described as “spry yet reflective” by Time Out New York.

In 2014, Rufolo released Bright! with his new sextet called Lifesize. He also released Sacred Jazz, a meditative solo piano album blending original compositions with jazz standards and hymns. In 2016 Dan joined forces with singer-songwriter Joyce Kwon to release Winter, an indie electronic EP dubbed “the soundtrack to the coldest season of your life.” Dan then released Jazz Meditations, under Heart Dance Records in 2019, further exploring themes of introspection and tranquility. He is currently releasing piano music under the moniker Piano Nicolo and has several albums marked for release this year featuring the full gamut of his compositional styles.
